Theobroma Cacao

Who doesn't love chocolate? It's sensual, indulgent, satiating, even aphrodesiatic. It's been a delicacy in many cultures for ages, and considered the Food of the Gods. But did you know the raw cacao bean also happens to be the most antioxidant rich food in the world? Cacao helps your blood vessels to dialate, which can help lower blood pressure. It even has the power to reduce the risk of cancer and heart disease! However, when cacao is combined with milk, as many commercial chocolates are, the dairy blocks absorption of antioxidants, so opt for vegan chocolate. Additionally, heating cacao, (or any other food for that matter) destroys nutrients and valuable enzymes, so it's ideal to consume chocolate raw. During the creation of our truffles, low temperatures are maintained to preserve the beneficial qualities and distinct flavor of the Guatemalan cacao beans. The only sweetener used at The Vegan Genie is raw, low-glycemic, coconut sugar!

So, now that you know this- enjoy more chocolate!

It's what you've always wished for

Agave vs Coconut sugar

Agave is not a natural food, nor is it completely organic. Agave is almost entirely fructose, and is usually chemically processed. Contrary to popular belief, it's certainly not low in calories, and usually not raw as claimed on many labels. It has not officially been proven safe for diabetics, but due to the way it's metabolized, it's believed to be so. I highly recommend reading up on the subject at www.mercola.com. I'm a fan of Dr. Mercola and he explains the hazards of agave quite well.
So, what's the best alternative, you ask? Coconut sugar! It's loaded with nutrients, susatainably harvested, and low glycemic- plus it's got a great flavor. I think it's the best option for sweetener available! If you'd like more information, please visit www.coconutsecret.com. I find them an absolute pleasure to do business with! They offer raw granulated coconut sugar, as well as raw syrup products. Very exciting, and I love them both! If you're looking for a Portland based source of coconut palm sugar, try the People's co-op bulk section, or New Seasons in the sweetener area.
